TomatoFiesta is this Saturday at the Soil King
It’s almost time for the 1st Annual TomatoFiesta at the Soil King Garden Center in Cloverdale.
Festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 9 at 320 Santana Dr. and include a Tomato Contest, a Tomato Salsa Competition, live music by Bruce Halbohm and Greg Hester, airbrushed temporary tattoos by KO Studio Art and a chance to meet and talk with gardening experts, including a number of Soil King vendors who will be giving away free samples.
Food and drink will be available for purchase and the Soil King will be offering a 20% Store-Wide Discount on all in-stock merchandise.
Bring your biggest, weirdest, prettiest or best tasting home-grown tomatoes to the Soil King on Thursday, Aug. 7 by 5 p.m., but no later than Noon on Friday, Aug. 8, to be entered into the Tomato Contest. Categories include Biggest (weight), Best Flavor, Weirdest Shape, Best Tasting Cherry and Prettiest Sliced Tomato.
Tomatoes will be judged Friday afternoon and winners will be announced at Noon on the day of the event.
There will also be a Young Farmers Competition for kids 16 and under who submit their own home-grown tomatoes in one or more of the above categories. Winners will receive ribbons and prizes like seeds, soil and plant trays to encourage them to continue their gardening activities.
Salsa, to be judged by TomatoFiesta attendees, should be delivered by 5 p.m. on Friday, but no later than 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Bring at least 16 ounces in a sealed container. Categories for this competition include Best Green, Best Red, Best Fruit and Hottest.
Winners in the Adult Competitions will receive ribbons and prizes donated by local merchants and Soil King Vendors.
A complete set of contest rules can be found on their website at thesoilking.com.
While there is no admission to enter or attend the TomatoFiesta, King says he is holding a raffle to benefit the Stock a Student Classroom project for Jefferson and Washington Schools. Tickets are $1 each and donation cans will be placed throughout the garden center.
To date, nearly $3k in raffle prizes have been donated, most of them garden-related, along with two $75 gift certificates from KO Studio Art.
