Free tax preparation for qualified Cloverdalians
The Sonoma County “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!” (EKS) Kick-Off Event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 26 at Empire College, 3035 Cleveland Avenue in Santa Rosa. A large group of volunteer tax preparers will be on hand to provide FREE tax preparation for early season walk-in clients. Appointments are also available by calling 2-1-1 in advance.
EKS is a United Way-led coalition of organizations in Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino Counties that have come together to offer FREE tax assistance at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. Each of these partner organizations offers a unique set of services in addition to serving as a VITA site during tax season. EKS has now expanded to include over 20 organizations located within the three counties.
In Cloverdale, the Cloverdale Alliance for Financial Education (CAFÉ) at 129 N. Cloverdale Blvd., Suite 11, will be providing this FREE tax assistance for local low-to-moderate-income households with earnings up to $50,000 last year.
Like their counterparts in other locations, Cloverdale’s volunteer EKS tax preparers are all IRS-certified and experts in ensuring that their clients claim the tax credits for which they are eligible.
Through the work of dedicated volunteers in all three counties, $2.4 million in refunds were brought back to the local communities in 2012, with an average refund amount of $1,800. The goal of the coalition this year is to prepare at least 2,000 tax returns.
