Remembering Polly

Another roadside memorial to Polly Hanna Klaas

Polly Hannah Klaas was kidnapped from her Petaluma home during a slumber party on October 1, 1993. Her convicted murderer, Richard Allen Davis, led police to her body in a field just south of Cloverdale two months later. Almost immediately a makeshift memorial for the 12-year-old sprung up on the site.

Although the original memorial was dismantled a number of years ago at the request of her family, new ones continue to take its place — like this one spotted recently.

Then, just as mysteriously as they appear, they vanish, possibly taken down by someone who prefers to honor Polly’s memory by honoring her parents’ wishes.

  1. Richard Allen Davis is still alive and well thanks to liberals.

  2. Polly will always be remembered in our home…her sweet face shines on forever. The t-shirt w/her photo etc. hangs in our office.

  3. I remember when Polly’s body was found. It was a sad day in Cloverdale. I think the entire town wept for her. May God bless her family.

  4. Of course, “like” is not something we feel.

I know her family preferred that no memorial be where they found her body, but I think the broken heart of the community continues with a need to express the grief, and this is it. Our hearts still hurt. It was a heartbreaking time in our lives–we all lived those two months in the hope that she was still alive, as we held our own children closer.

  5. There is never a time when I drive by the site that I don’t think of little Polly. I know she is safe now, but it remains the deepest of sorrows for her family, friends and those of us who care.

  6. I went there with another officer to set up lights. Sad day I’ll never forget.

  7. I remember it well…..Scumbag was in Mendocino County jail for a while……Just because someone is a liberal does not mean we are against the death penalty…..I worked for Dept. of Corrections as a prison guard….In Calif. when someone gets the death penalty, it means nothing…This human trash will outlive a lot of us…..Sadly….

  8. Polly; God bless you! You are angel; and when I die I will meet you in heaven!

  9. Perhaps instead of a “Polly Klass Memorial,” a memorial to all the lost children abducted, killed or never found could be made. The location south of town is private property. Perhaps it could be done at a park or the cemetery. If anyone is interested in exploring this with me let me know. I am at Dolorosa Candles in town.

  10. Richard Allen Davis should have been put to sleep many years ago. He should face his judgement day. He sent Polly to heaven years ago and took her life on earth away. And her killer, an institutionalized person, gets to live in a society where he is comfortable. Hopefully soon his appeals will run out so Polly and her family will get justice for the sick coward that killed Polly, a beautiful Angel in heaven.

  11. Polly, we all love you. I personally plan on meeting you in heaven.

My heart still breaks for the family of Polly. Her grandpa died not seeing justice completely finished in his little girl’s death. The only good thing that happened out of her death is the awareness that there are predators out there that don’t care for families or breaking them up.

As far as Richard Allen Davis and others like him, I feel they will go to the same place as Osama bin Laden. There are places reserved for “people” like them. They are murders. Animals kill for survival.

  12. Richard Allan Davis is a piece of crap plain and simple. Mark Klass will never have total closure until this piece of garbage is killed.

I’ll never forget him turning to the court room cameras and flipping the double bird. He has absolutely no remorse for Polly or society I hope and pray in the next life he suffers the way Polly suffered before she went to heaven. Linda is right “There is a place reserved for “people” like him.”
